The results were led by stronger-than-average results at food, drug and mass retailers. Department, apparel and accessory stores lagged.
The sales-weighted composite gains were weaker than the 5.7 percent same-store sales gain last month, but stronger than the 1.7 percent gain last October.
Costco posted the biggest increase in same-store sales at 9 percent, followed by Buckle at 8.7 percent and Tandy Leather Factory and Dillard's at 8 percent.
The biggest decliner was Bon-Ton Stores with a decrease of 10.2 percent, according to Kantar Retail.
"Weather, pricing and promotions all had some impact on October’s same-store sales results," says Frank Badillo, senior economist at Kantar Retail. "The biggest drag on growth, however, has to be the belated impact of shoppers’ intention to curb their spending in the coming months and into the holiday.”
