Pixar’s “Onward” and Paramount’s “Sonic the Hedgehog” have joined a growing list of films being released on video-on-demand early.
Disney has announced that Pixar’s recent theatrical release “Onward” will be released on video-on-demand and Disney+ ahead of its original home theater debut window. In a tweet on Disney’s Twitter Account, the company announced that the animated film has been launched as a digital download and will make its Disney+ appearance on April 1. The release comes just weeks after the film made its theatrical debut on March 6.
Paramount announced that “Sonic the Hedgehog” will be released early as a digital purchase starting March 31. The announcement comes just 46 days after its initial theatrical debut. Before its digital debut, the film outperformed box office expectations by grossing more than $300 million in worldwide ticket sales (Box Office Mojo).
It joins other recent films that have been released early on virtual platforms such as Disney’s “Frozen 2” and Universal’s “Trolls World Tour.”
