Hobbit Hits $1 Billion

Warner Bros.’ 3D tentpole, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, has hit $1 billion in global ticket sales, a honor only 15 other films in history have achieved, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The film hit the milestone over the weekend, propelled by sales in China. The film has grossed more than $300 million domestically since its Dec. 14, 2012, premiere.

The second film in the franchise, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, is set to hit theaters in December.
