The Clio Awards has announced that Barbie will be honored with a Brand Icon Award at the 60th annual Clio Awards ceremony.
The Clio Brand Icon Award highlights a brand that has transcended the product or service it provides to become a fixture in popular culture. As the 2019 recipient, Barbie joins past winners such as Coca-Cola. Each recipient is chosen for elevating its brand to icon status among its peers, industry experts and consumers.
“Both Clio and Barbie are celebrating our 60th anniversary this year,” says Nicole Purcell, president, Clio. “Our culture has evolved in so many ways over the last six decades, but Barbie’s iconic message has always remained the same. The brand’s commitment to empowering girls to believe in themselves, their choices and their unlimited potential is still so timely and so powerful, we’re thrilled to be able to honor that message and celebrate our shared history as part of our milestone awards ceremony.”
Lisa McKnight, global head, dolls, Mattel, will accept the honor on behalf of the brand. The ceremony is scheduled to take place on stage at the Manhattan Center in New York City on Sept. 25.
“Barbie has stood the test of time because of the brand’s ability to connect to culture and it’s innate purpose–to inspire girls around the world to be anything,” says McKnight. “Evolution makes a brand relevant, but purpose makes a brand eternal. Today’s consumers want brands they can believe in, and Barbie’s dedication to championing girls is what will make the next 60 years even better than the first.”
Over the years, the Barbie brand has leveraged licensing to evolve and develop new takes on the iconic doll. Previous partnerships have led to the creation of Barbie creations inspired by the likes of David Bowie and Star Wars.
