Sony Pictures Animation is planning a 3D take on the spinach-loving sailor, Popeye, according to a Variety report.

Popeye first appeared in King Features’ Thimble Theater comic strip in 1929 and has appeared in numerous television and film adaptations since, including a 1980s live-action film starring Robin Williams. King Features still owns the exclusive licensing rights to the Popeye brand.

Genndy Tartakovsky, who recently wrapped Hotel Transylvania for Sony, is reportedly attached to develop and direct the film. Hotel Transylvania is set to hit theatres in September.

Tartakovsky, known for his distinctively sharp, dark animation style, is also attached to direct a film adaptation of Cartoon Network’s “Samaurai Jack,” which he created.

Tartakovsky has made a name for himself with his work at Cartoon Network, including "Dexter's Laboratory" and "Star Wars: Clone Wars."
