Interactive exhibit in New York City will feature Betty Boop character as a PepsiMoji.

In celebration of Pepsi’s global #PepsiMoji campaign and World Emoji Day, July 17, Pepsi has opened a new, interactive exhibit that follows how love has been communicated throughout the years.

The exhibit, “Love: From Cave to Keyboard, imagined by Pepsi,” will aim to explore the evolution of communication through the emotional lens of love ranging from primitive drawings and hieroglyphics to icons on the screen to today’s emojis.

“Inspired by the communication currency of today’s digital culture and our very own emoji, the iconic Pepsi globe, and the more than 1,000 proprietary PepsiMoji designs created for our global PepsiMoji program–we’re bringing a unique and fun perspective on visual language and cultural conversation with this immersive exhibit,” says Carla Hassan, senior vice president, global brand management, global beverage group, PepsiCo.

The limited time exhibit will carry attendees through a variety of mediums including:

  • Silent film–in an Art Deco-inspired theater for two, guests will be taken back to the era of early cinema with a reel that celebrates great moments of love captured on silent film;

  • Illustrations and icons–Pepsi partnered with Fleischer Studios to give Betty Boop a modern makeover, complete with her own PepsiMoji design and layered augmented reality to bring the classic character to life;

  • Music–This immersive experience will showcase the power of music to convey emotion with a DJ set from soul/R&B duo Lion Babe;

  • Sign language–Cast members from the Tony-nominated production of “Spring Awakening” will depict the story of young love blooming over first date jitters through the medium of sign language;

  • Photography–Through a collection of curated images, this exhibit will create a photographic mosaic of various expressions of love from the exhibit’s own attendees, as shot by Instagram photographers @arnold_daniel, @Roon and @JoshFromNY;

  • Ancient communications–This interactive exhibit will look back to history’s early “love notes” through cave drawings, smoke signals, hieroglyphics, cuneiform, runes, symbology, Morse Code and other historical forms of communication;

  • The Rise of Emoji–As the final installation, this exhibit will track the evolution and incarnations of the modern day emoji and will feature Heart, an original sculpture by Brooklyn-based artist Shinji Murakami, who brings an 8-bit image of a heart emoji into 3D. The installation also leads to an immersive PepsiMoji experience, complete with facial recognition technology to match attendees’ expressions with a PepsiMoji design for social sharing.

"Love: From Cave to Keyboard, imagined by Pepsi" will be open to the public this weekend at 433 Broadway in New York City.
