With Netflix already making its intention clear for expansion into gaming, the streaming service has officially acquired video game creators Night School Studio.
The studio is best known for the creation of the narrative-driven teen thriller, “Oxenfree,” which garnered acclaim across console and PC before heading to mobile platforms.
In a statement, Night School Studio noted that Netflix is providing storytellers across television, movies and now games, “a canvas to create and deliver excellent entertainment to millions of people.”
“Of course, it’s a surreal honor to be the first games studio to join Netflix,” says Sean Krankel, chief commercial officer, Night School Studio. “Not only do we get to keep doing what we do, how we like to do it, but we get a front-row seat on the biggest entertainment platform in the world. The Netflix team has shown the utmost care for protecting our studio culture and creative vision. We’ll keep making 'Oxenfree II.’ We’ll keep cooking up new game worlds.”
Following the news of Netflix acquiring the Roald Dahl Story Company, news of Night School Studio joining the Netflix family hints at a big push forward for entertainment innovation and intellectual property development from one of the world’s largest VOD providers.
