Netflix has drawn a new agreement with King Features Syndicate to bring “Cuphead” to life in a new animated series following its breakthrough debut as a video game from Studio MDHR.

Inspired by the retro cartoon style of the 1930s, “The Cuphead Show!” will be a character-driven comedy that follows the misadventures of both Cuphead and his brother Mugman. The “Cuphead” games sold more than 4 million units worldwide, bagging more than 20 major awards and even gaining the iconic Game of the Year accolade by Xbox.

This move into an animated series comes as part of King Features’ strategy to build character franchises across multiple platforms.

King has already leveraged the brand for consumer product partnerships with companies including Funko, McFarlane Toys, Dark Horse Comics, Elope, Jay Franco + Sons, 1000 Toys, Fifth Sun, Just Funky and retail partnerships with Target, Walmart, Hot Topic, Spencer’s and GameStop.
