Following Richard Broadbent’s decision to step down as chairman of Tesco, retail veteran John Allan has been appointed to the role, effective March 1.

Allan most recently served as deputy chairman of Dixons Carphone. He is also currently chairman of Barratt Developments and Worldpay, roles he will continue to hold. Allan will step down from the Dixons Carphone board and also resign as a senior advisor to Alix Partners, chair of the DHL U.K. Foundation and as a member of the Royal Mail board.

Allan began his career at Lever Bros and Bristol-Myers in a variety of marketing roles and has subsequently held executive positions at a range of companies including divisional chief executive officer at BET, chief executive officer of the Ocean Group and then of Exel (created through a merger of Ocean Group and NFC in 2000). He joined the board of Deutsche Post when that company acquired Exel in 2005  and was chief financial officer for Deutsche Post from 2007 until he retired in 2009.
