UBM’s Global Licensing Group will kick off the licensing industry’s largest event, Licensing Expo, next month at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas, Nev., with a raft of events for both exhibitors and attendees alike.

This year, the show will include a series of events designed to enable licensing professionals to take full advantage of their time in Las Vegas with more industry events, networking opportunitites, exclusive parties and more.

However, with so many events, it can be a daunting task for first-time attendees to navigate the show floor and experience everything the annual trade show has to offer. To assist retailers, manufacturers and licensees in maximizing their time at Licensing Expo, UBM’s Global Licensing Group has compiled a series of tips on how to reach and approach some of the Expo’s top licensors and brands.

Before the Show

  • Understand your marketplace. Think about what you bring to the table and be prepared to discuss potential revenues and retail distribution options.

  • Connect with the key contacts and decision makers who drive the licensing programs on behalf of the licensors.

  • Use Licensing Expo’s Matchmaking Service to search for exhibiting brand owners and agents that match your objectives and get a meeting as early as possible.

  • Use LinkedIn to follow the people you want to reach.

  • Don’t send messages full of information, try to keep messages no more than three to four lines.

  • If you don’t receive a response, follow up.

At the Show

  • You have limited time, so be prepared. Bring samples and visuals to provide context for what you’re trying to achieve.

  • Don’t overpromise and be clear about your goals.

  • Be memorable. Try to come across as excited and someone who wants to continue conversation about the brand.

  • Build relationships. Be sure to attend the show’s raft of networking events, ranging from the Orientation Breakfast to the Opening Night Party.

After the Show

  • Follow up with potential partners within two weeks of the show.

  • Be prepared to adapt as well as remain tenacious.

  • Utilize LIMA and other networking resources to socialize and create more connections prior to next year’s show.

Sponsored by LIMA, Licensing Expo will take place May 23-25, 2017, as part of the inaugural Licensing Week, May 22-25, at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center. Registration is now available here.
