Lionsgate and Samsung Electronics America have teamed to create a virtual reality experience based on the Divergent film franchise.

The fully immersive, narrative experience is set in the world of the upcoming feature film The Divergent Series: Insurgent, which hits theaters March 20.

By putting on the Samsung Gear VR headset, users will experience what its like to be a "divergent" member of society. Fans of the film franchise will be subjected to a series of mental simulations in order to determine the full extent of their divergence within two distinct fearscapes, transporting them from the heights of a crumbling Chicago skyscraper and in front of a fast-approaching locomotive.

The four-minute "Insurgent–Shatter Reality" experience features stars from the film, including Kate Winslet as the leader of the Erudite faction.

"Virtual reality elevates the world of Divergent to a whole new level by creating a uniquely exciting and immersive experience for our fans," says Tim Palen, chief marketing officer, Lionsgate. "The 'Insurgent–Shatter Reality' experience reflects our commitment to partner with leading technology companies like Samsung to remain at the cutting edge of virtual reality and other innovations that expand the worlds of our franchises and extend our storytelling in exciting new directions."

"Insurgent–Shatter Reality" is currently touring New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Austin and San Francisco prior to going live in app stores. Fans outside the tour markets will have an opportunity to view the experience on Samsung Gear VR this weekend at select Best Buy stores across the U.S., and the experience is also now available on Samsung's Milk VR service.
