Macy’s president Hal Lawton has announced his departure from the role to accept the role of chief executive officer at Tractor Supply. Lawton had served as president of Macy’s since September 2017.
“Hal has made significant contributions to the business over the past two years, including improving the Macy’s operational cadence,” says Jeff Gennette, chairman and chief executive officer, Macy’s. “Hal also helped us build an excellent team and, with their leadership, I’m confident that Macy’s will continue strong execution through Holiday 2019 and beyond. I thank Hal for his service and wish him and his family well on the next leg of their journey.”
The resignation took effect Dec. 6. Lawton will take on his new role as president, chief executive officer, and member of the Board of Directors at Tractor Supply on Jan. 13.
Hal will succeed Greg Sandfort, who previously announced his intent to retire.
“After conducting a robust search process, the Board is convinced Hal Lawton is the right CEO to build on Tractor Supply’s success and lead the next stage of the company’s growth,” says Cynthia Jamison, chairman of the board, Tractor Supply. “Hal is a proven leader with a unique omnichannel experience to deliver on our customer’s evolving expectations as we look to the future of retail. With a strong track record of results across different companies, responsibilities and cultures, Hal has a broad base of experience in retail with a proven ability to drive innovative growth strategies. The Board is delighted to welcome Hal to the role and believes he is the right person to extend the remarkable track record of success under Greg’s leadership.”
Sandfort will remain at his post through February 2020, and then serve as advisor until Aug. 31 to ensure a seamless transition. He will serve out his term on the Board until May 7.
