Prince Harry and his wife Meghan are now set to create and publish new family properties, shows and films via Netflix.

New content created from the deal will reportedly focus on issues and topics that align with the Duke and Duchess’ recently announced charity foundation, Archewell. The Netflix news follows the launch of their own production company after leaving the service of the Royal Family at the start of the year.

“Our lives, both independent of each other, and as a couple have allowed us to understand the power of the human spirit: of courage, resilience, and the need for connection,” says the Duke & Duchess of Sussex in a public statement provided to The Guardian. “Through our work with diverse communities and their environments, to shining a light on people and causes around the world, our focus will be on creating content that informs but also gives hope. As new parents, making inspirational family programming is also important to us, as is powerful storytelling through a truthful and relatable lens. We are pleased to work with Ted and the team at Netflix whose unprecedented reach will help us share impactful content that unlocks action.”

Ted Sarandos, appointed co-CEO of Netflix in July, has already marked a world-first with former Monarchy members. The former long-standing Netflix chief content officer was appointed during one of its most successful streaming quarters. Netflix announced 10.09 million new subscribers during its second quarter as more consumers began streaming due to the COVID-19 pandemic and global lockdown.

Netflix’s deal with the Duke & Duchess of Sussex comes on the heels of other recent high-profile creator pacts with international figures such as the Obamas. In 2018, the former First Family signed a storytelling content partnership with Netflix that includes potential scripted series, unscripted series, docu-series, documentaries and features.

Now, as the streaming wars heat up, the positive and hopeful content in production by – not necessarily starring – the Obamas and former royals is a new step forward in the powerful new brand of Sussex Royal. We look forward to bringing you more updates on what that content and intellectual property may be as details emerge.
