Webcomic maker Webtoon and Crunchyroll have announced a strategic partnership that will see both companies collaborate on a selection of new animated series.
As part of the deal, Crunchyroll and Webtoon will co-produce and develop the new shows. The companies will collaborate on the distribution, licensing and retail for the content that is created under the agreement.
“We are extremely excited to be partnering with Webtoon,” says Joanne Waage, general manager, Crunchyroll. “Webtoon has a tremendous catalog of content and creators that resonate deeply with our audience, and we can’t think of a better way to delight fans than by bringing these stories to life through animation.”
New shows created from the partnership will be based on original webcomics from Webtoon. The goal is to create content that helps creators expand their comic creations to new platforms and reach a broader audience.
“There is tremendous crossover appeal with our audiences and exceptional creative synergy on the types of stories we want to tell,” says Taylor Grant, senior vice president, IP development, Webtoon. “We’re excited to partner with Crunchyroll to bring our globally appealing characters to audiences and consumers in new ways, as well as create new opportunities for our talented creators.”
Crunchyroll has continued to develop its portfolio with new partners being introduced throughout the year. Earlier this month, the company announced a licensing deal with Sunrise and Sotsu for the “Gundam” franchise.
