In the U.S. Ecommerce 2020 report, EMarketer have predicted a 10.5 percent decline in total U.S. retail sales this year due to the COVID-19 health crisis.

The report estimates a 14 percent drop in brick-and-mortar sales. However, ecommerce is poised to grow 18 percent following a 14.9 percent gain in 2019. EMarketer finds that ecommerce sales were driven by a surge in click-and-collect including curbside pickup. The company expects U.S. click-and-collect ecommerce sales to grow to $58.52 billion, up 60.4 percent from their initial forecast of 38.6 percent growth.

The report also finds U.S. ecommerce in 2020 included a rise in older buyers joining the online retail space with 12.2 percent growth for those ages 65 and older.

EMarketer reports that the top 10 ecommerce retail businesses are expected to grow 21.8 percent. Amazon will continue to gain U.S. ecommerce market share this year and Walmart's ecommerce growth will bring the store to the number two position for the first time.

The report comes following the news that ecommerce sales spiked in April. According to Adobe’s Digital Economy Index, buy-online, pickup-in-store orders grew 208 percent year-over-year in April.
