Warner Bros. Pictures has formed what it is calling a “creative consortium” of filmmakers to amp up its production of animated films, the first of which will be The LEGO Movie.

The new think tank of six filmmakers will work together and independently to develop one feature film each year in collaboration with the studio.

“Warner Bros. has an extraordinary legacy in the world of animation, including some of the most enduring characters in cinema history,” says Jeff Robinov, president, Warner Bros. Pictures Group. “Looking to the future, we have now gathered some of the best and brightest talents in the industry to help us grow and broaden that legacy. Drawing upon their imaginations and inspiration, the studio will produce a slate of new and original animated films that are sure to delight audiences of all ages.”

The first film on the docket is 3D, animated adventure The LEGO Movie, which will bring LEGO construction toys to the big screen for the first time. The film is slated for release Feb. 7, 2014.

The LEGO Movie will be followed by two other animated features, Storks in 2015 and Smallfoot in 2016.
