Ubisoft is planning a video game based on Columbia Pictures’ and Sony Pictures Animation’s upcoming film The Smurfs 2.

“Aligning ourselves with an industry leader like Ubisoft is a perfect complement to our marketing efforts for the film,” says Mark Caplan, vice president, Sony Pictures Consumer Products. “The game will help bring audiences closer to the magical world of the Smurfs, allowing players to interact and control their own adventures.”

The console game will be released in July for Xbox 360, PlayStation3 and Nintendo Wii, Wii U and DS, in advance of the movies July 31 premiere.

Developed by Ubisoft and WayForward, the game will be based on The Smurfs 2 film and follows up on a between Ubisoft and Sony Pictures Consumer Products for “The Smurfs Dance Party.”

In the game, players will assume the role of one of nine Smurfs from the film as they move the movie’s environments including New York City and Paris.

“By collaborating with Sony Pictures on the iconic Smurfs license again we are able to extend the experience from film to immersive gameplay,” says Christian Salomon, vice president of worldwide licensing, Ubisoft. “The family-friendly ‘The Smurfs 2’ video game will allow players of all ages to continue the fun and revel in new adventures.”
