Nearly eight years after the Nintendo Switch system debuted, Nintendo has officially revealed its successor. Nintendo released a video showing the new hardware, giving a first look at the Nintendo Switch 2. Fans have waited for an updated iteration of the hybrid gaming console and have eagerly speculated about a release date.

The popular gaming console, which features detachable Joy-Con controllers, is playable in portable mode and on TV via a dock. The first-look trailer for the Switch 2 shows an updated console with a larger screen and bigger controllers in a new matte black color. The Joy-Cons now appear to connect magnetically to the main tablet, which features a new, improved-looking U-shaped kickstand and a second USB-C port.

The Switch 2 is backwards compatible, meaning it can play Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive games, as well as both physical and digital Nintendo Switch games. Although, Nintendo warns that certain Nintendo Switch games may not be supported on or fully compatible with Nintendo Switch 2

Nintendo did not announce a release date or price for the new console in its Switch 2 reveal on Thursday, but the company did confirm a 2025 release window. Nintendo also teased a new “Mario Kart” game running on the Switch 2. Details will be shared on the Nintendo website later, and fans can tune into a Nintendo Direct online event on April 2 to learn more.
