Mattel's Ken Doll Gets a Makeover

Barbie’s boyfriend will now be available in original, slim and broad styles as well as in seven skin tones.

Mattel has expanded its Barbie Fashionistas doll line with 15 new, diverse Ken dolls that feature three new body types and a variety of skin tones, hairstyles and outfits.

Barbie got a similar makeover in January 2016.

The new Fashionistas Ken doll line will include three body types (original, slim and broad), seven skin tones, eight hair colors, nine hairstyles and a host of modernized fashions, ranging from athletic wear to casual business attire.

In addition, the brand is launching 25 new diverse Barbie dolls, which will join more than 100 looks launched in the Barbie Fashionistas line in the last three years.

“By continuing to expand our product line, we are redefining what a Barbie or Ken doll looks like to this generation,” says Lisa McKnight, senior vice president and general manager, Barbie. “Evolving Ken was a natural evolution for the brand and allows girls to further personalize the role they want him to play in Barbie’s world.”

The new Ken and Barbie dolls can be viewed online at and will launch at retailers throughout the U.S. this year.
