In anticipation of the holiday shopping season, Toys"R"Us has begun opening 600 temporary express stores in malls and shopping centers nationwide. Last year, the retailer launched the initiative with 90 express locations.
The 4,000-square-foot shops began opening this past June and will continue to open through early November. Approximately half of the 600 planned locations have opened. The initiative will generate 10,000 jobs nationwide. TRU plans to look for opportunities to keep the stores open after the holiday season as the company did last year. This summer, eight express stores from the 2009 holiday season were transitioned into permanent TRU Outlet stores.
"By doubling the number of Toys"R"Us locations nationwide, now more than ever we will be available when and where customers want to shop with us this holiday season," says Jerry Storch, chairman and chief executive officer of Toys"R"Us. "We are pleased that this significant expansion of our Toys"R"Us Express initiative also creates thousands of new jobs beyond our usual seasonal workforce build."
Meanwhile, Babies"R"Us stores also plan to offer a wider selection of toys for the holidays. The in-store toy shops will feature popular characters from Toy Story 3, Cars, Sesame Street and Thomas the Tank Engine.
