The Royal Mail has rejected seven of the ten cartoons presented by Bamforth for a limited edition set of stamps to celebrate the card company’s 100th anniversary on the basis that the artwork is “too rude.”

The ensuing controversy has raised awareness of the licensing campaign managed by JELC, global licensing agent for the Bamforth Vintage Collection, which contains more than 20,000 images.

“We were a bit surprised at the ban,” says Janet Woodward, director of JELC. “These cards are, after all, a part of British history, just as much as musicals, railways, wildlife, Carry On films and the many other themes that have graced special stamp editions in recent years. Luckily, we do have a few thousand more for the Royal Mail to consider.”
