Same-store sales continued to climb in January with a 4.9 percent gain versus a 3.2 percent gain In December for 31 retailers reporting, according to Kantar Retail. This was a strong performance over January 2010 when same store sales posted a 3.3 percent gain.

Kantar Retail believes that shoppers continue to increase their spending plans. “Shoppers are slowly becoming less cautious about their spending and that appears to be borne out by January’s same-store sales results, especially when you factor out the negative impact of bad weather,” says Frank Badillo, senior economist.

Limited Brands led all gainers with a same store sales increase of 24 percent, while American Eagle had the biggest decline of six percent.
