NPD Group Predicts Static Holiday Spending

The NPD Group's annual holiday survey discovered little or no change in consumer spending habits from last year's holiday season.Survey participants reported that 64 percent plan to spend the same amount of money on holiday gifts as they spent last year.

Survey participants reported that 64 percent plan to spend the same amount of money on holiday gifts as they spent last year. Last year 61 percent reported that they would spend the same amount. Only 9 percent of respondents plan to spend more, the same amount as last year.

Similar to last year's results, the top categories consumers plan to shop this holiday season are clothing, toys and books, the same chart toppers as 2010.

Consumers' preferred shopping destinations are, in order of popularity, as follows: discount, online and department stores.

The number of consumers planning to shop for themselves has risen from 17 percent to 19 percent.

“With no new items rocking the consumers’ world or anything to feed a shopping frenzy, it will be challenging to see significant growth," says Marshal Cohen, chief industry analyst at NPD Group. "Now combine that with the many social and economic issues that have turned into distractions, and it will be very challenging to get much growth from a consumer base that is in limbo."
