McDonald's started its worldwide The Smurfs Happy Meal promotion to support the 3-D film's release last Friday. The promotion began at participating McDonald's restaurants in Latin America July 14; in North America last Friday; and will roll out around the world through November.

Sixteen different Smurf toys will be offered in Happy Meals until August 25. In Brazil, the U.K. and Europe, Happy Meals will also feature plush toys.

The global promotion, which carries a strong environmental message, will be brought to life on McDonald's website for kids, Stage M. The site features music videos, activities, games and augmented reality applications.

"McDonald's is committed to playing a positive role in children's well-being," says Kevin Newell, executive vice president and global chief brand officer, McDonald's.  "The Smurfs Happy Meal program delivers great quality food choices, fun toys and engaging digital content that reinforces important environmental messages."

"By working together with McDonald's, we created a fantastic, fun and ultimately unique program that brings the enchanting world of The Smurfs to millions of people around the globe," says George Leon, executive vice president, Sony Pictures Consumer Marketing. "Our partnership is just one example of how two beloved brands can engage kids and families in new and meaningful ways."
