Mattel must limit their copyright infringement claims against MGA Entertainment's Bratz doll line to the four first-generation dolls, introduced in 2001, and two later models, a California federal judge wrote.

In a ruling issued Dec. 27, U.S. District Judge David O. Carter granted a request by MGA to prevent Mattel from seeking infringement damages "against all subsequent generation Bratz dolls with the exception of Ooh La La Cloe and Formal Funk Dana."

Mattel will proceed with the remainder of its trade-secret theft claims at a trial scheduled to start Jan. 11.
