Mattel is revamping “Masters of the Universe” with a new show and toy line.

Mattel has released images and an official launch date for the upcoming Netflix animated show “Masters of the Universe: Revelation.”

“Narratively our show is set up as the next episode in the legacy ‘80s animated series that aired from 1983-1985,” says Kevin Smith, showrunner and executive producer. “This is a continuation of that story. We're playing with the original mythology and characters, and revisiting and digging deeper into those original, unresolved storylines from the original show. Visually we also made the conscious decision to lean into the original ‘Masters of the Universe’ line of toys for inspiration as well. Mattel owns this entire vast library of that artwork, so right away we wanted the show to open with classic pieces of that artwork. Mattel has been committed to this look since they first started as a toy line in the '80s, and now we’re leaning into it and honoring it.”

Part 1 (5 episodes) for “Masters of the Universe: Revelation” will premiere on July 23. In addition, they have also revealed their Masterverse toy line inspired by the show.

“I still remember playing with my He-Man and Skeletor action figures as a kid in the ‘80s,” says PJ Lewis, vice president, global head, action figures, Mattel. “I would recreate epic battles while watching the television series about the mythical world of Eternia. He-Man was, and will always be, my No. 1 action figure hero.”

The new “Masterverse” collection include action figures with at least 30 points of articulation and come with each character’s unique accessories like He-Man’s power sword and shield and Battle Cat’s armor and helmet.

Specific offerings, which will be available at major retailers on June 15, include:

  • The Masterverse Core Assortment: Seven-inch He-Man, Skeletor, Moss Man and Evil-Lyn action figures;
  • Masterverse Skelegod: A nine-inch action figure which also comes with an alternate pair of hands, one weapon and one flame accessory; and
  • Masterverse Ultimate Battle Cat: A 14-inch-long action figure with detachable armor and helmet that, once removed, reveals the character’s alter ego, Cringer.

Mattel will be introducing additional characters to the collection later this fall.
