GameStop Powers Up with Walmart Exec

GameStop has tapped Walmart veteran Dawn Henry to serve as the vice president of its ThinkGeek division.

In her new role, Henry will work to grow the pop culture retailer and closely with those responsible for supporting and developing the company’s strategy and merchandising operations within the collectibles business and e-commerce channels.

“Adding a seasoned toy and licensed retail merchant such as Dawn to our team demonstrates our continued commitment to further accelerate the growth of our global Collectibles business,” says, Janet Bareis, senior vice president, GameStop. “Having worked with Dawn while I was at Walmart, I know firsthand how fortunate we are to have such an accomplished and innovative merchant leading our ThinkGeek division.”

Previously, Henry served in a number of senior buyer roles at Walmart. Most recently she worked to grow the company’s girl’s business, working on product innovation, brand acquisitions and licensing negotiations.

GameStop is set on expanding its team of retail merchants and focusing on collectibles.

Chinese Influencer Debuts Handbag on WeChat

Chinese fashion blogger and influencer Tao “Mr. Bags” Liang has teamed up with luxury label Tod’s for a new limited-edition handbag that will launch on a WeChat mini program.

The Tao Liang x Tod’s bag feature black and pink, dog-inspired details and is available now on “Baoshop,” a WeChat mini program that developed by Liang for fashion bloggers to create a more personal shopping experience.

This marks the first time a luxury brand has launched a product through a WeChat mini program curated for bloggers.

Singer Ariana Grande has partnered with Luxe Brands for a new fragrance.

Ariana Grande Cloud features a blend of lavender blossom, juicy pear, crème de coconut, creamy woods and more.  The unique bottle design was inspired by nature, clouds and Grande’s spirit. The perfume comes in a holographic pixel carton, a nod to the digital world.

'Disturbia' in NYC: Inside Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty Debut

The three-day event saw the “Work” singer’s new palette collection, Moroccan Spice, revealed at locations such as Penn Plaza, Downtown Brooklyn and the Financial District. Visitors were invited to try new products inspired by the colors and tones of a traditional Moroccan spice market, including eyeshadow, make-up brushes and eyeliners. The immersive event featured a hookah lounge, a photo-op spot with an enlarged makeup palette, and try-on stations.

The Fenty Beauty store will be at the South Street Seaport in New York City.

HarperCollins to Fete Children's Author

HarperCollins Children’s is celebrating a decade of publishing with author David Walliams  with a week of activities, events and more in the U.K.

CPLG, The World of David Walliams’ licensing agent, brokered the deal.

The first-ever “Walliams Week” will celebrate the British children’s author in classrooms across the country starting with 25,000 activity packs that have been distributed to primary schools through educational press partner Teach Primary. Elsewhere, WHSmith, Waterstones and other independent retailers will host a roster of events across the U.K. with retailer packs.

The hallmark event follows a year of deals for the property. Appointed to manage the brand in 2016, CPLG has since brokered deals with Smiffy’s for dress-up; Cooneen for nightwear; Paul Lamond Games for puzzles; Lagoon for card games and Danilo for greeting cards. Confectionary from Kinnerton and Top Trumps from Wining moves are set to hit retail shelves at the end of the summer.

“As part of our growth strategy for The World of David Walliams, it was an obvious next step to extend ‘beyond the book’ into licensing and merchandise, and we are delighted to be working with CPLG to do just that,” says Alison Ruane, brand strategy director, HarperCollins Children’s Books. “With the unique combination David’s hilarious and heart-warming words with the glorious illustrations of Sir Quentin Blake and Tony Ross, we are developing consumer products that are a guaranteed must-have for the millions of book fans.”

Both companies are planning to expand the consumer product offerings ahead of World Book Day 2019.

Walliams is best known for his titles Gangsta Granny and Mr. Stink as well as his extensive work on British television.

Godzilla Hits the Road with Bandai

The experiential display offers a look at the world of Godzilla and the Japanese tokustasu (live action films with special effects) industry though large diorama and other production materials from Toho Studios. Visitors will have the option to purchase any of more than 150 Godzilla items, one of the largest offerings to date, including event-specific items only available in Taiwan.

The “Godzilla Special Exhibition” will be open to the public from June 30 to Sept. 16 at the Songshan Cultural Creative Park No. 1 Warehouse in Taipei.

UndFunLIfe has signed on to sponsor the event, and Bandai will continue to look for foreign partners to create events aims at showcasing the Japanese IP.

The keepsake coins are available in two styles: Paddington waving a British flag outside of Buckingham Palace and Paddington waiting at Paddington Station, landmarks he has visited in the series.

"I loved reading the books about Paddington when I was younger, and felt a real sense of nostalgia as I was designing these coins,” says Dave Knapton, coin designer, The Royal Mint. “Paddington was part of my childhood, but now he's being discovered by a whole new generation. I wanted to bring his portrait to life and show him in a very realistic environment, so I began with a modern train at Paddington Station, showing Paddington waiting patiently on his suitcase for his new life to begin.”

Chargeurs Sews Up U.S. Acquisition

The acquisition is the company’s first deal in the U.S. and will extend Chargeurs’ global presence into new performance wear categories including outerwear, performance apparel, athleisure and intimate apparel.

The company has named CFT’s managing director and president Angela Chan to supervise the organization’s worldview expansion; as well as current PCC chief executive officer Scott Tesser to join CFT as chief sales officer.

Chargeurs Fashion Technology’s client list includes Chanel, Gucci, Hermès, Uniqlo and more.
