Amazon Prime Day 2018 overtook Cyber Monday, Black Friday and Amazon Prime Day 2017 as the largest shopping event in the company’s history.

Target, which offered a one-day sale to compete with the e-commerce giant, also saw record gains during the same 36-hour period.

Amazon Prime members across the globe purchased over 100 million products on Amazon during the Prime Day Event, which ran from July 16-17. Bestsellers included Amazon’s family of devices including the Fire TV Stick, Alexa Voice Remote and Echo Dot, which were promoted through a 12-hour early access deal. For the first time, U.S. Prime members activated deals at Whole Foods Market, where organic strawberries were the best-selling item. Total 2018 Amazon Prime day sales exceeded 1 billion dollars.

"Prime Day offers us a unique opportunity to thank Prime members with our best deals," says Jeff Wilke, chief executive officer, worldwide consumer, Amazon. "Extending Prime Day to a day and a half this year allowed us to further reward members with unbeatable deals, access to exclusive new products and unforgettable experiences that highlight the many benefits of a Prime membership. All of this was made possible because of our many valued associates – the global team that continues to make Prime Day bigger and better."

Additional 2018 Amazon Prime Day highlights include:

  • A record number of prime shoppers across 17 countries;

  • More new prime member sign-ups on July 16 than any previous day in Amazon history;

  • Millions of Fire TV, and Echo collection device purchases;

  • Customers bought more than five million items across toys, beauty, PCs, computer accessories, apparel and kitchen products;

  • Prime Day was the best event ever for Amazon devices for kids, including Echo Dot Kids Edition, Fire 7 Kids Edition tablet and Fire HD 8 Kids Edition tablet.

  • July 16 was the best day ever for Fire TV devices and Kindle e-readers on Amazon globally.

  • For the first time, members in Australia, Singapore, the Netherlands and Luxembourg participated in Prime Day.

  • Millions of customers around the world streamed Unboxing Prime Day events including the Amazon Music concert with Ariana Grande as well as the “PUBG Squad Showdown” hosted by Twitch Prime with a performance by deadmau5.

Target, which launched a one-day sale to cash in on the enthusiasm surrounding Prime day, scored the highest single day traffic on its site.

Shoppers took advantage of savings to stock up on small appliances, beauty, personal care, baby gear, home and tech items.
