Upwardly mobile

Spring seems impossibly slow arriving here in the UK. It's not just the weather. At retail, many are still waiting for a change in temperature in the behaviour of consumers, put off by the lengthy cold snap and still showing their reluctance to spend heavily on the high street. The move towards accurate food labelling, fair trade products and organic materials are new trends being adopted by the big retailers to attract customers. In future issues, we'll be looking at how licensing can adapt to these trends.

Meanwhile, this is a big mobile phone issue. As licensed mobile activity reaches critical mass, Vodafone's Graham Ferguson gives us his view on trends in this important area. We also publish a cut-out-and-keep guide to mobile phone jargon. It's Winnie the Pooh's 80th birthday, and time to review great product from the first quarter of the year.

The last few years have been dominated by talk of classic properties, building brands for the long term and realistic expectations of licensing

revenue. Just this week, however, 4Kids dared utter the un-utterable. It thinks it has found the next Pokemon. Ten years after Pikachu and his friends changed the face of the licensing business, it will be interesting to see how the world responds.
