Telegraph Media Group (TMG), which publishes U.K. national newspapers The Daily Telegraph and The Sunday Telegraph, has signed its first-ever licensing deal for Matt cartoons.

The deal, with greeting cards and stationery licensee Woodmansterne, is for 16 different designs and marks the 20th anniversary of Matt Pritchett's cartoons for the group. The cards go on sales later this month in independent card shops and in John Lewis stores, as well as in gift packs of eight cards sold directly by the Telegraph. WH Smith will sell the cards beginning February.

The first Matt cartoon graced the front page of The Daily Telegraph on Feb. 25, 1988, and it has since become one of the most popular features of the newspaper.

In addition to the new greeting cards range, TMG and Orion are publishing "Matt-The Best of 2008," a book celebrating the best cartoons from this year but also looking back at Matt's favorite selection of caricatures from the last 20 years.

"This is the first time TMG has syndicated Matt for greeting cards and it's proving a successful step in our brand extension," says Sophie Hanbury, syndication director, TMG. "The Telegraph books, syndication and editorial teams have worked closely together to create a synchronized offer of the Matt card gift pack and "Best of Matt 2008" book. We're looking forward to exploring further how we can expand the Matt brand beyond the Telegraph."
