“Doctor Who”-inspired stories will kick off with the first, fourth, 11th and 12th Doctors.
Sanrio and BBC Worldwide have joined forces to feature “Doctor Who” characters in the storytelling and illustrative style of Roger Hargreaves, creator of the Mr. Men Little Miss brand, in a series of storybooks.
Penguin Young Readers Group, a division of Penguin Random House, will serve as the master publisher.
The new stories, written and illustrated by Roger's son, Adam Hargreaves, will combine the multiple iterations of “Doctor Who” through the ages with the design and humor of Roger’s original designs.
“We are thrilled to be teaming up with Sanrio on this fantastic project and think that fans will love these creative incarnations of the Doctor reimagined in the ‘Hargreaves’ style,” says Jan Paterson, head, book and audio publishing, BBC Worldwide U.K. “We’re always looking for innovative ways to engage our fans so this is the perfect partnership for us.”
The first four books in the new series will feature the first, fourth, 11th and 12th Doctors and are slated to hit shelves in spring 2017.
“There is a wealth of unofficial fan-created content online,” says Alastair McHarrie, licensing director, Sanrio. “We wanted to give something back to these supporters so we’ve created the first official Hargreaves mash-up. Who better to partner with than another classic British property, ‘Doctor Who.’ We couldn’t be more excited.”
