Z2 Comics has teamed with the Grateful Dead to release a limited-edition graphic novel based on the formation of the American jam band.

Written by Chris Miskiewicz and illustrated by Noah Van Sciver, Grateful Dead Origins will trace the history of the band from its early days in bars to its successes on global tours. The limited-edition graphic novel will be released as an oversized coffee table book and will come bundled with a selection of unreleased songs from the band.

“Chris and Noah have captured the Dead's sensibility in their words and images that bring to life on the page the earliest days of the Grateful Dead, from the band's founding in 1965 through to Woodstock,” says David Lemieux, audiovisual archivist and legacy manager, Grateful Dead, in a statement to the Hollywood Reporter. “We couldn't be happier to be partnering with such talented artists who have delved so deeply into the Dead's history and origin.”

The Z2 Comics news continues the Grateful Dead brand’s push to uncover unique deals in various verticals. LIMA recently announced the brand as one of the nominees for the 2019 International Licensing Awards in recognition for its licensing program.

Grateful Dead Origins will be released in April 2020.
