New products, and the 4K Ultra HD release, will mark the 40th anniversary of “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.”

Universal and Amblin Entertainment will honor 40 years of “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.” Throughout the year, there will be new merchandise across a variety of categories, a re-release of the film in IMAX, retail exclusives, anniversary celebrations and more. 

“‘E.T.’ is a classic film that has been a longstanding part of the cultural zeitgeist,” says Melissa Rodriguez, vice president, franchise strategy, Universal Products and Experiences (UP&E). “From treasured lines like ‘be good’ and ‘phone home,’ to the iconography of red hoodie sweatshirts and BMX bikes, the film has stayed present in our collective hearts and minds for 40 years. We’re looking forward to celebrating this classic story of friendship and adventure alongside many generations of fans, while also bringing new viewers into the fold through new products and offerings.” 

Tapping into the film’s iconography and scenes, new merchandise is launching throughout the year; some highlights include (all are available at mass and specialty retailers unless otherwise noted): 

  • Mattel is releasing three new offerings: an Interactive E.T. plush – complete with red hoodie and bicycle basket packaging, inspired-by Hot Wheels character cars and Fisher Price Little People collectible figures – featuring film characters E.T., Elliott and Gertie

  • TOMY is launching an adorable Toomies My Best Friend “E.T.” Interactive Plush and Pop Up “E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial” Action Game for kids

  • Perfect for your bicycle basket, Build-a-Bear (U.S.) is launching an “E.T.” plush with light-up finger and the red hoodie, as well as sound card with memorable phrases, each sold individually

  • Steiff has created a 13-inch collectible “E.T.” plush wearing the red hoodie, pre-order now on Steiff.com (U.S. and EMEA) 

  • Give E.T. a forever home with Posh Paws (U.K.) cuddly soft toy

  • Funko is releasing nearly a dozen new Pop! figures, along with the “E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial:” Light Years from Home Game, and other Pop!-inspired apparel and accessories, including Loungefly mini backpacks and wallets

  • Basic Fun offers retro items, such as an “E.T.”-inspired Speak and Spell classic educational toy, and “E.T.” Moon in My Room light that recreates the most iconic scene from the film while playing through the lunar phases; all available exclusively on Amazon.com and at Universal Studios theme parks 

  • The Noble Collection offers high-end collectibles for the whole family, including variations of E.T. in plush form, a detailed E.T. BendyFig, and an intricately crafted Toyllectible Treasure diorama inspired by the iconic flying bicycle scene, available on NobleCollection.com

  • A E.T. Hallmark (U.S.) ornament featuring light and sound, and itty bittys mini plush

  • Ravensburger is showcasing classic film iconography through puzzles

  • The publishing program includes formats for all ages:
    - “‘E.T.: the Extra Terrestrial:’ The Ultimate Visual History” from Insight Editions 
    - “‘E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial:’ The Classic Illustrated Storybook (Pop Classics)” from Quirk 
    - “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial” designed in Funko Pop! style from Little Golden Books 

  • Kuwahara created the BMX bicycle that Elliott rides in the film, and this year they are re-releasing that bicycle to celebrate the anniversary 

  • Numskull’s new Power Idolz (U.S. and U.K.) wireless phone charge combines the film’s original VHS case design with E.T.’s arms and legs, available on Numskull.com

  • Cakeworthy (U.S.) offers out-of-this-world apparel and accessories, including a PJ set, mini backpack and “E.T. Phone Home” flannel overshirt 

  • Taking inspiration from pop culture moments on and off screen featuring E.T.,

  • In Europe (and available to ship to the U.S.), Maison Labiche has embroidered E.T. and film-inspired phrases onto apparel and hats for the whole family

  • Earlier this year Janie & Jack (U.S.) launched a children’s apparel collection; Mini Rodini (U.S. and EMEA) launched their second apparel collection for children; H&M kids (U.S. and EMEA) have on-trend T-shirts and sweatshirts for little E.T. fans 

  • For the tiniest generation (and their parents), Cribstar (U.K.), Sleep No More (U.K.) and Cotton On (AUS) have infant and toddler apparel 

  • Relive the adventure and magic of one of actor Drew Barrymore’s most films with a branded eyeshadow palette by Flower Beauty, launching late October at CVS and Kroger stores, and ULTA.com

  • Eco-chic beauty brand, LaPierre Cosmetics (U.S.), has created an E.T.-inspired nail lacquer – a dark, interstellar metallic green called “Phone Home” – launching Nov. 1 on LaPierreCosmetics.com and in Macy’s stores 

  • Pets can join the celebration as Fetch for Pets (U.S.) will introduce an all-new “E.T.” line of dog costumes, sweatshirts and bandanas 

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment will be re-releasing the film for the 40th anniversary on home entertainment platforms, including 45 minutes of brand-new bonus features; own it on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-Ray and Digital Oct. 18.
