Disney is no stranger to producing billion-dollar movies, so it wasn’t a huge surprise when the global box office from the Ryan Reynolds/Hugh Jackman buddy film, “Deadpool and Wolverine,” became the second billion-dollar film of the year. According to Box Office Pro, with an additional $57.8 million take in 52 international territories, “Deadpool & Wolverine” sprinted past the $1 billion global milestone with $1,029.5 billion over the weekend. And while it’s an impressive mark, it’s not the first film to reach that level this year. (Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” is sitting at $1,593,756,948 globally.)

When the film opened on July 26, License Global reported “Deadpool and Wolverine,” the third entry into the Deadpool series, had shattered box office records with $205 million in domestic ticket sales during its opening, the highest debut of 2024 and of an R-rated film ever. Last week, as the film continued to rake in the cash, License Global also shared some of the film’s more interesting and lucrative licensing deals.

It remains to be seen whether the dynamic Marvel duo can catch up with DC’s “The Joker” (2019), which remains the top-grossing R-rated feature with a $1,078,958,629 global box office. The much-anticipated sequel to that film, “Joker: Folie à Deux,” is set to release Oct. 4. The second-spot film this weekend was Reynolds’ wife, Blake Lively’s romantic drama, “It Ends With Us,” which, according to Box Office Mojo, brought in an estimated $50 million. The last time husband-and-wife films occupied the top two spots was back in 1990 when Bruce Willis’s “Diehard 2” held the top spot while then-wife, Demi Moore’s, “Ghost” sat at No. 2.
