New awards and networking program to launch in the region next year.

Licensing and merchandising professionals Dirk Timmerman and Marc Leemans have unveiled plans for the first Benelux Licensing & Merchandising Business Awards, which will take place Oct. 17, 2017.

The awards will kick off in in Antwerp, Belgium with a networking event where international speakers will address the importance of the Benelux market in international licensing and merchandising. Afterward, attendees will attend a dinner during which the 2017 Benelux Licensing & Merchandising Business Awards will be presented.

Timmerman boasts a successful career in the licensing business and has worked on merchandising for brands and artists including Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga, Frozen, Cars and UEFA Euro 2016, among many others.

Leemans has been in the licensing business for more than 20 years and worked with The Walt Disney Company and VTM, a commercial broadcaster in Belgium, prior to starting his own licensing and merchandising company, Brand Solutions.

“When Dirk Timmerman introduced me this unique project, I didn’t have to think a long time about it,” says Leemans. “In a market that always follows the big trends, it is very obvious that the market also get its own awards ceremony. We really noticed the lack of such an event in Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxemburg for the licensing and merchandising business where they can also network.”

The awards will be categorized into themes such as toys, music, movies, games, fashion, beauty and lifestyle, sports and other entertainment-themed categories. A lifetime achievement award will also be distributed as well as a 2017 Benelux Licensing & Merchandising Public Choice Award, which will be presented to the most popular merchandising character as voted on by 100 children and their parents.

“We are very happy to announce the first edition of this event and we are even more happy that the Benelux region including Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxemburg will finally get its own licensing and merchandising business awards,” says Timmerman.  “The Benelux region has always been an exciting market in licensing and merchandising, driven by big and small licensees. We are a unique place where big licenses from The Walt Disney Company and Nickelodeon amongst others compete with the characters of Studio 100. And this makes it very challenging to organize licensing and merchandising business awards in the Benelux.”

More details on the event will follow later this year.
