French retailer Auchan has revealed itself as the second-largest retailer by sales volume in the Russian market, behind Russian group X5.

Auchan was forced to disclose its figures as part of a recent court battle with tax officials. Until now, the figures were not made public, the Moscow Times reported. As indicated in the court's report. Auchan's average revenues stood at 15 billion rubles ($510 million) to 20 billion rubles ($680 million) per month. At that rate, its revenues throughout 2009 likely stood at 180 billion rubles ($6 billion) to 240 billion rubles ($8 billion), making it second only to X5 retail group, which operates the Perekryostok and Pyatyorochka chains and whose net revenues in 2009 stood at 275 billion rubles ($9 billion).

Auchan operates 36 hypermarkets in Russia, including Auchan hypermarkets and Auchan City stores. An Auchan spokesman would not comment on the figures.
