New awards ceremony hosted by the Asian Licensing Association.

The inaugural Hong Kong Licensing Awards took place Tuesday at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre in conjunction with the Hong Kong International Licensing Show and Asian Licensing Conference this week.

Designed to recognize the accomplishments of Hong Kong’s creative and licensing talents, the event was organized by the Asian Licensing Association and sponsored by Create Hong Kong of the Government of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and supported by the Hong Kong Productivity Council.

Gregory So, secretary for commerce and economic development of HKSAR Government, presented the awards. The event was officiated by Ada Leung, director of intellectual property, HKSAR Government; Jerry Liu, head of CreateHK, HKSAR Government; Toby Chan, founding chairman, Asian Licensing Association; and Danny Cheung, chairman, organizing committee, Hong Kong Licensing Awards.

Six awards were handed out in the categories of Best Property, Best Licensee, Best Licensing Agent, Best Promotion Campaign, Best Young Property and Best New Character Design for Licensing,

Of particular interest was the Best New Character Design for Licensing category, which was open to Hong Kong designers with less than six years of working experience and no previously published characters. To help promote these new characters to potential licensing agents, the organizer produced figurines for each of the five finalists that were on display at the Hong Kong International Licensing Show. Additionally, the winning character–Yiu Hoi Tak's Pu & Bu–was given the full-size character costume treatment and participated in the show's Mascot Parade.

“Creative industries is one of the most vibrant sectors in Hong Kong’s economy," says the Asian Licensing Association's Chan. "The establishment of the first Hong Kong Licensing Awards could provide deeper insights for creative and licensing talents on the infinite values of branding. Together with Hong Kong’s unique international marketing position and professional knowledge, local talents could expand marketplace for creative contents worldwide, and thus enhancing Hong Kong’s competitiveness, and building Hong Kong as the best licensing hub in Asia.”
