The family of actor John Wayne has released a large collection of personal and professional memorabilia for public auction this fall. Heritage Auction will conduct the first ever single-owner auction from John Wayne’s personal estate.
More than 400 items will be sold, including a black eye-patch Wayne wore while filming True Grit in 1969; the cowboy hat John Wayne wore during the 1975 sequel Rooster Cogburn; Wayne's Golden Globe award for Best Actor for his role in True Grit; more than 50 movie scripts from such celebrated John Wayne films as True Grit, The Green Berets, Stage Coach, Rio Lobo, The Hellfighters and Sons of Katie Elders, including 20 annotated with Wayne’s handwritten notes; and Wayne’s cowboy boots and leather belts.
Public exhibitions of the John Wayne collection will be held in Dallas, Texas, and New York City before the auction takes place in Los Angeles Oct. 3-6.
“From the original collection of memorabilia, my father carefully selected items for specific museums to ensure that his loyal and dedicated fans, whom he always credited for his success have the option to enjoy the full John Wayne experience,” says Ethan Wayne, son of John Wayne and president of John Wayne Enterprises.
