The 1850 brand will expand Smucker's presence in the premium coffee aisle.

NORTH AMERICA—The J.M. Smucker Company has announced plans to grow its coffee initiative with a new line of premium coffee inspired by the heritage of its coffee brand, The Folger Company.

The new coffee line named 1850 pays homage to The Folger Company founded during the 1850s Gold Rush in California.

Made with Arabica fire-roasted beans, the coffee will be available in four blends: Lantern Glow Light Roast, Pioneer Blend Medium Roast, Trailblazer Medium Dark Roast and Black Old Dark Roast. Through the new brand, Smuckers hopes to expand its presence in the premium coffee space.

“1850 allows us to build on our market-leading position in the at-home coffee category by strengthening our presence in premium, one-cup, and ready to drink iced coffees, the fastest-growing product segments,” says Mark Smucker, president and chief executive officer, The J.M. Smucker Company. “1850 also validates our new approach to innovation which includes an intense focus on consumer insights, careful product development, and renewed attention to design and creative execution. This is central to our strategy of driving long-term growth while delivering an outstanding experience for consumers.”

The new product will feature special packaging like a branded wax seal and will be initially available in roast and ground and whole bean prepacked bags, and K-Cup pods in early April. The portfolio will expand with a ready-to-drink offering this summer.
