Music publishing company Concord Music Group and producer Stuart Benjamin are developing a musical based on the story behind soul label Stax Records.

The deal was negotiated by Act III Licensing.

The Broadway show is scheduled to debut in spring 2016.

Stax Records began in Memphis, Tenn., in the late '50s during a period of racial strife and tensions. Stax’s artist roster and staff helped shape the sound of American soul music, launching the careers of musicians such as Otis Redding, Isaac Hays, Booker T. and the MG’s, The Staple Singers, Albert King, Johnnie Taylor, Eddie Floyd, William Bell, Steve Cropper, Rufus and Carla Thomas.

An accompanying book will be written by Matthew Benjamin.
