Sony's 'Ratchet & Clank' Hit the Big Screen

New movie is first to be produced in tandem with a video game franchise.

Rainmaker Entertainment has released the new film

Ratchet & Clank

, based on the PlayStation video game series of the same name, on 2,890 screens across North America.

The film, distributed by Gramercy Pictures in the U.S. and Universal Pictures in Canada, was produced in tandem with Sony Computer Entertainment and Insomniac Games' latest video game release for the franchise.

Ratchet & Clank

is the first feature film to have been produced in tandem with a video game, and it has been incredibly exciting to be part of a constant flow back-and-forth among extremely creative talents, sharing assets with the goal of creating an extended experience for fans,” says Michael Hefferon, president and chief creative officer, Rainmaker. “The movie and the new game complement one another, and we are confident that

Ratchet & Clank

will prove to be the full entertainment package for old and new fans alike.”

The movie tells the story of two unlikely heroes who struggle to stop the alien Chairman Drek from

destroying every planet in the Solana Galaxy. Ratchet is the last of his kind, a “lombax,” who grew up alone on a backwater planet; meanwhile Clank is a robot with “more brains than brawn.” Throughout the film, the pair learn about heroism, friendship and the importance of discovering their own identity.

Ratchet & Clank

features a voice cast including Paul Giamatti, John Goodman, Bella Thorne, Rosario Dawson and Sylvester Stallone, among others.

In addition to the film’s North American release, the film has already been released in international markets such as the U.K., Germany, Spain, Iceland, Vietnam, Brazil, Argentina, Greece and the Middle East.

The film will continue its international rollout this week with releases in Belgium, Hungary, Portugal and South Korea. Additional markets such as Chile, Malaysia, Singapore, Australia and Italy.

The “Ratchet & Clank” video game is also available now.
