Mind Candy has launched the new app “PopJam” in the U.K., which is designed to be a creative community for kids ages 7 to 12.

The app allows kids to create art, stories, photos, games, contests and more and then share their creations with other children around the world.

Similar to other social media sites, users can follow their friends and other users as well as like, comment and even draw responses to other creations in their feed.

In addition to user-generated content, the app will feature professional content including bands, cartoon characters, artists, authors, movies, sports teams, school subjects, games and more.

Many of the content channels in the app will be entertainment-focused, but “PopJam” will also play host to a large amount of educational content, too.

Among the partners already on board in the U.K. are Natalia Vodianova, Decoded, My Blue Nose Friends, Find Chaffy, Jon Burgerman, Borrow My Doggy and Chineasy.

“We love the idea of empowering kids with digital tools and then seeing what they come up with,” says Michael Acton Smith, chief executive officer, Mind Candy. “Creating a product like this is full of complex challenges, but we feel very strongly that without a viable community designed for this younger demographic, kids under 13 will continue using apps designed for over 13-year-olds like Instagram, SnapChat and Tumblr.”

There are no plans to generate revenue from the app in the short-term, but Acton Smith said that future plans might include a subscription service for premium content.
