New record leads into reboot of the 'Jem and the Holograms' brand.

Hasbro Studios has teamed with Sony Music/Legacy Recordings to release a tribute album to the toy company's 1980s cult TV show "Jem and the Holograms."

Featuring modern renditions of hit tracks from Starlight Records' Jem and the Holograms, The Misfits and The Stingers, the album is a contemporary salute to the '80s series, as Hasbro plans reboot the brand with a feature film and accompanying products later this year.

The digital-only album, titled "Truly Outrageous: A Jem and the Holograms Tribute," also provides a showcase for up-and-coming artists who perform new versions of the 12 classic songs. The album will launch Friday and is now available for pre-order.

The "Jem and the Holograms" television series ran from 1985-1988 and follows Jerrica Benton, whose discovery of Synergy, a powerful computer companion, allows her to transform from co-owner of Starlight Music into a rock star.

“This contemporary spin on the classic hits celebrates the music our longtime fans of 'Jem and the Holograms' came to love through the original Hasbro animated series, while Millennials will be thrilled to hear new music from their favorite emerging artists,” says Stephen Davis, chief content officer, Hasbro. “The album serves as a true display of self-expression connected to music, a theme at the heart of 'Jem and the Holograms.'”
