Agreement will allow the use of the term “emoji” in Sony’s upcoming movie merchandising program.

The Emoji Company and Sony Pictures Animation have entered into a licensing agreement regarding the registered emoji trademark.

The agreement will cover the use of the term “emoji” in connection with Sony’s worldwide merchandising program for its upcoming film The Emoji Movie, in theaters Aug. 11.

As part of the agreement, both companies will offer unique, distinct sets of emoticons and characters as well as target different markets.

“We are happy to enter into this agreement with Sony Pictures,” says Marco Huesges, chief executive officer, Emoji Company. “There will be no confusion in the marketplace since Sony Pictures Animation’s products will be from their original and proprietary The Emoji Movie motion picture content while the Emoji Company is offering its own developed icons with the classic look and feel known from the Unicode.”
