Agency signs on to relaunch the character brand in Asia across key product categories.

American Greetings Entertainment has appointed IMG to represent the Care Bears for licensing in Japan and South Korea.

IMG will launch Care Bears in both countries by developing products across a host of categories including plush, apparel and accessories, as well as direct-to-retail programs beginning early next year. The agency will also enhance the brand’s digital presence, including launching the official Care Bears website in Japanese.

“We are delighted to represent Care Bears in Japan and South Korea,” says Miki Yamamoto, senior vice president, licensing, Asia, IMG. “We have overseen some important developments this year for the character-based brands we represent in this region, and we look forward to applying this previous experience while working alongside American Greetings Entertainment to grow their most recognized brand.”

American Greetings created Care Bears in 1982. The brand was originally featured on greeting cards before evolving into toys, television and film in 1983. Today, it boasts more than 200 global licensees across all key categories and will celebrate its 35th anniversary next year.

“IMG is a premiere agency and we’re thrilled to work with a talented team of individuals who will be a driving force to bring the Care Bears back to fans that love them, and to reintroduce them to a new generation of kids and adults in Japan and South Korea,” says Janice Ross, head, global licensing, American Greetings Entertainment. “IMG will be sharing artwork never before seen to these markets in a fresh, exciting way.”
