NORTH AMERICA–The Corita Art Center and Uniqlo have unveiled a new collection of apparel inspired by the works of artist Corita Kent, also known as Sister Mary Corita.

Parham Santana, Corita Art Center's brand extension agency, brokered the deal.

The new range will include a variety of t-shirts and sweatshirts for both men and women and will feature a host of graphics inspired by the artist’s work. The line is also part of SPRZ NY, Uniqlo’s global project featuring specially designed items inspired by influential artists.

Kent was an artist known for her approach to design and education, with her work reflecting concerns regarding poverty, racism and war and messages of peace and social justice.

“Corita was about finding joy in the everyday,” says Ray Smith, director, Corita Art Center. “She was really influenced by the environment that was around her, whether it was a religious environment or pop culture environment. Corita felt like her job was to deliver these messages about spirituality.

But from an aesthetic standpoint, she just wanted it to be beautiful. It was an expression of joy.”

Uniqlo’s latest collection is now available at its flagship location on 5th Ave. in New York City as well as online.
