MGM Debuts Cosmetic Line A symbol of Hollywood glamour, MGM launched MGM Premiere Cosmetics on QVC last week. MGM Premiere is the first and only makeup line licensed by a major studio. The launch product is a long-lasting foundation priced between $25 and $30. The foundation comes in four shades: Ivory, Beige, Walnut, and Espresso. MGM makeup artist Cheri Minns (Honeymoon in Vegas, Birdcage) serves as consultant for the line and spokesperson for the launch on QVC. Other MGM Premiere products are in development including an eye kit (with brow liner and eye shadow), a face kit (with cheek color), and skin-care and hair-care offerings. PBR Inks Toy Deal X Concepts signed a multi-year toy licensing agreement with the Professional Bull Riders, Inc. (PBR), with trading cards expected to hit stores in fall 2004 and toys in spring 2005. The licensing agreement will entitle X Concepts to manufacture micro-size figures, trading cards, and remote-control toys based on the bulls and bull riders from the PBR Built Ford Tough Series (BFTS) tour. The first toys to enter the marketplace will be figures with bulls based on some of the top bull riders including Adriano Moraes, Justin McBride, Ross Coleman, and Michael Gaffney. The list of top bulls includes Cash, Hammer, Mossy Oak Mudslinger, and Little Yellow Jacket. Tokyopop Adds to Cine-Manga Lineup Tokyopop Inc. will create the Cine-Manga version of Totally Spies in a new partnership with Marathon. Totally Spies, Cartoon Network’s second highest rated show, follows the adventures of three Beverly Hills teens who unwittingly become international secret agents. “Totally Spies has all the personality, energy, and verve we could hope for in a Cine-Manga,” says Tokyopop Editor Erin Stein. “Clearly, there’s a reason why nearly 2 million viewers tune in daily to see one of the coolest shows on TV.” Neuburger Gains Exposure in Asia Karen Neuburger will bring her signature pajamas, bedding and accessories, towels, and aromatherapy accessories to the Asian market for the first time. The products are currently in Isetan Parkway and Isetan Scotts, both department stores located in Singapore. The company also plans to expand into Malaysia this fall. Palomino Named to New Post at DIC DIC Entertainment named Juanita Palomino vice president of domestic licensing. In her new position, Palomino will lead the division’s initiatives for properties such as Trollz and Strawberry Shortcake. Prior to joining DIC, Palomino served as executive director of domestic sales for Viacom Consumer Products. New Clients for Stone America Stone America Licensing, LLC, signed on two new clients. Stone America will be responsible for establishing a comprehensive worldwide licensing program for International Truck and Engine Corporation. Initial categories will include apparel and accessories, tools, automotive accessories, limited editions, and household appliances. Stone America also will create a comprehensive licensing program for artisan Susan Dumas. Initial categories will include home décor, social expressions, kitchen, textiles, and domestics. EnterSport Changes Name EnterSport, the exclusive licensing unit of The Interpublic Group of Companies, Inc., announced a repositioning within IPG and a name change to Magna Global Licensing. “The new name better suits the capabilities of our licensing venture,” says Michael Nyman, chairman and CEO of Bragman Nyman Cafarelli Marketing and Public Relations and founder of the unit. “The fact that Magna Global is such a well-respected and well-known neutral consolidated media negotiator and entertainment programmer made it obvious that we would be more appropriately positioned and aligned with the name change and shift into Magna Global.” Andy Cohan, who currently heads the group as executive vice president, was named principal and will continue to report to Nyman. Subway Offers Static Shock Kids’ Paks Subway Restaurants, Warner Bros. Consumer Products, and DC Comics are teaming up to introduce a collection of four toys based on Kids’ WB!’s animated television series, Static Shock, from Warner Bros. Animation. For this promotion, the restaurant also partnered with Kids II to offer a toy premium for children ages 18 months through preschool. The toys are available now through July 4, 2004, in Subway Kids’ Pak meals, at participating restaurants in the United States and Canada. The Subway Kids’ Pak meal consists of a deli-style sandwich, a Minute Maid 100% Juice juice box, and a Fruit Roll-Ups fruit snack. One of four toys will be available with each meal. The promotion will be supported online at www.subwaykids.com and through nationally produced point-of-purchase materials. Loudeye Acquires OD2 Loudeye Corp., a business-to-business digital media solutions company, acquired privately held On Demand Distribution Ltd. (OD2), the largest digital music provider in Europe. The combination approximately doubles Loudeye’s revenues on a pro forma basis. The combined company now serves more than 200 customers in 15 countries, adding European customers such as Coca Cola (UK), MSN (Pan-Europe), MTV (Pan-Europe), Tiscali (Pan-Europe), Wanadoo (Pan-Europe), Virgin Megastores (UK), HMV (UK), Karstadt (Germany), ninemsn (Australia), and numerous other retailers, portals, telcos, commercial radio stations, and ISPs throughout Europe and Australia. Additionally, the combined company will have 1.3 million music tracks licensed for Europe from the five major labels, as well as hundreds of independent labels including AIM, Playlouder, Naxos, Zomba, V2, Saregama, and Beggar’s Banquet. Betting on Betty Breakthrough Animation Inc., represented by Joy Tashjian Marketing Group, LLC, named Penguin Group (USA) the master publishing licensee for its animated series, Atomic Betty. Penguin Young Readers Group will launch its Atomic Betty book series in summer 2005 with five key titles, published through the company’s Grosset & Dunlap and PSS! imprints. Included in the planned initial releases are a Cine-Manga full-color graphic novel, “The Atomic Betty Files,” “Atomic Betty Mad Libs,” and a How to Draw Cine-Manga Book featuring scenes from the Atomic Betty show. Penguin Young Readers Group will support the Atomic Betty publishing program with an array of retail and consumer marketing initiatives, including in-store displays, “Top-Secret” phone messages from Betty to buyers, Hyper-Galactic Starcruiser-shaped sell-in kits, Atomic Betty-themed retailer promotional premiums, and more. Atomic Betty will launch this fall on Cartoon Network (U.S.), Teletoon Canada, Cartoon Network UK, CITV UK, and M6 France. Tech Savvy Cards and Crayons Techno Source reached an agreement with The United States Playing Card Company (USPC) to include its Bicycle brand on electronic games. The announcement follows the introduction of Techno Source’s line of LCD-based handheld electronic games featuring the United States Playing Company’s Bee and Maverick brands. The company also signed an agreement with Binney & Smith to produce electronic games based on the Crayola brand. The initial line features two handheld games, Crayola Racer and Paint Splat (suggested retail, $7.99 each), and one TV play system (suggested retail, $19.99), and will be available nationwide in the fall. Crooning with Care Bears Montreal-based entertainment company Madacy Kids entered into a licensing agreement with American Greetings to develop musical CDs based on the Care Bears characters, themes, and values. The deal was brokered by worldwide licensing agency The Joester Loria Group. The first release in the collection, “Meet the Care Bears,” hits shelves June 29. Madacy will release two more CDs this fall, “Care Bears Karaoke Sing Like A Star” and “Holiday Hugs,” along with additional titles: “Let’s Be Friends,” “Nighty-Night,” and “Share a Smile,” scheduled to hit stores in 2005. Each CD will be available for a suggested retail price of $5.98 ($7.98 in Canada) and will come packaged with a free lyric booklet. Lollytogs Partners with Brooks Fitch Holdings Children’s apparel company Lollytogs Ltd. signed an exclusive worldwide licensing agreement with Brooks Fitch Holdings, a financial arm of the Safdieh family. In spring 2005, Brooks Fitch Holdings will produce, distribute, and market newborn (0 to 9 months) layette, playwear, sleep ’n play, and blanket sleepers under Lollytogs brand Baby Healthtex and infant (12 to 24 months) woven sets under the Healthtex brand. The lines will target mid-tier and specialty stores. New Lassen Gallery Christian Riese Lassen opens a new Lassen Art Gallery at 1162 Prospect Street in La Jolla, CA, July 4. Lassen will showcase his artistic tribute to America by unveiling a new line of Pop Art originals featuring the Statue of Liberty. Three new images will be revealed in this American series.
