New Program Teaches Nutrition ABCs Sesame Workshop is launching a comprehensive, multi-year initiative that aims to help preschoolers and their parents live healthier lives. The “Healthy Habits for Life” initiative will utilize a coalition of partners and an advisory board of health, nutrition, fitness, and education experts to develop and distribute multimedia, age-appropriate content targeted to preschoolers and their caregivers, empowering them with knowledge and positive attitudes about their bodies. The components of the initiative that are being developed directly for children will come under the umbrella of “Happy, Healthy Monsters” and will include a new line of home videos, book titles, and interactive media that will use the characters to teach these important lessons. In other news, Sesame Workshop partnered with fashion designer Nicole Miller on a line of newborn, infant, and toddler apparel called “Sesame Street by Nicole Miller.” Contemporary themes such as New York City taxis, shopping, Western, and fairies will run throughout the line as will Miller’s proprietary stripe. The apparel line is created by Children’s Apparel Network and will ship to department stores in spring 2005. Sesame Workshop will extend the “Sesame Street by Nicole Miller” program into additional categories such as bedding, plush, and gifts in the future. Betty & Veronica Lifestyle Program Archie Comics Entertainment launched a Betty & Veronica lifestyle program, signing 15 licensees for a variety of apparel and accessories categories. The theme of the initial licensing program is “Are You a Betty or Are You a Veronica?” Betty represents the popular girl next door, while Veronica is more glamorous and sophisticated. The line initially will launch at Kitson on Robertson Boulevard in Los Angeles through August before going wide at high-end boutiques nationwide. Miramax Films and Archie Comics Entertainment, LLC, will co-produce a live-action movie based on Betty & Veronica. Genius Products, Hasbro Work in Concert Genius Products, Inc., and the Hasbro Properties Group will make beautiful music together as part of a new licensing agreement. Genius Products will create a line of CDs for the My Little Pony and Tonka brands to be sold individually and in multi-packs for fall 2004. In addition to the music created by Genius Products, the CDs also will feature tunes from the My Little Pony and Tonka home video libraries. Four Legends to Get Star Treatment The Roger Richman Agency, Inc., recently signed on as the exclusive agency for George Burns and Gracie Allen, Bobby Darin, and Gloria Swanson. The agency will work with select advertisers to leverage the notoriety of George Burns and Gracie Allen, while interest in Bobby Darin’s life will be reignited with the release of Beyond the Sea, a biographical feature film. For Swanson, the agency will tap into her internationally known association with glamour; stardom; Hollywood’s Golden Age; and one of the most popular films of all time, Sunset Boulevard. MZB, Foreman Team Up for Charity MZB partnered with George Foreman on a “signature” Elgin watch sub-collection as part of its “Time to Make a Difference?” national charity watch program. The initial collection (due for Father’s Day) is inspired and endorsed by the two-time World Heavyweight Champion and includes dress and sports-style watches. Elgin will donate a contribution along with a portion of the proceeds to The George Foreman Youth and Community Center. The national program will be available to all retailers and will feature inserts for existing counter displays among other POP materials alerting consumers about the program. Sean John Inks Fragrance Deal The Estée Lauder Companies Inc. signed an exclusive worldwide licensing agreement with Sean John. As part of the multi-year agreement, The Estée Lauder Companies will create and market a new line of fragrances under the Sean John name. Terms were not disclosed. Ingroup Licensing Adds New Client Ingroup Licensing added June Ambrose, founder and president of Mode Squad, Inc., to its client roster. As the exclusive worldwide agent, Ingroup will collaborate with her on a comprehensive lifestyle brand that will include apparel, accessories, and home furnishings. Mode Squad, Inc., is a creative service management company in the entertainment industry in the areas of fashion, makeup and hairstyling, photography, set design, and direction. Candie’s Expands Brand Through New Alliances Candie’s, Inc., signed a three-year licensing deal with LaRue International for a line of handbags and small leather goods under the Candie’s label. LaRue began showing product at the May New York Accessories Market Week. In other news, BONGO, a division of Candie’s, inked two new deals. Van Mar Inc. is on board to create junior intimate apparel, and Fashion Accessory Bazaar LLC will come to market with kids’ backpacks, handbags, small leather goods, and accessories. The company also recently announced an agreement with the In Mocean Group for junior BONGO swimwear and cover-ups. Licensee Count Gets a Boost Alliance Atlantis is building excitement for its new Dragon Booster franchise by signing a worldwide trading card deal with Score Entertainment and a North American home entertainment deal with FUNimation. Dragon Booster is heading to the U.S. on Jetix (ABC Family and Toon Disney’s branded block) and on CBC in Canada in October 2004, before rolling out around the world in early 2005. Dragon Booster is a mythic good vs. evil struggle in a classic, yet timeless world where humans and dragons co-exist. Penn Joins Executive Team at KN Ltd. Michael Penn joined Karen Neuburger/KN Ltd. as vice president of brand licensing. In his new role, Penn will oversee licensing relationships for the current line of KN Ltd. products, as well as identify and secure new licensing partnerships. KN Ltd. is a lifestyle design company that offers comfort-inspired apparel, accessories, and home products including sleepwear, loungewear, hosiery, bedding, journals, and scrapbooking materials. Licensing Show Shuttle The International Toy Center will provide shuttle bus service between the ITC and the Jacob Javits Convention Center during Licensing 2004 International Show, June 8 to 10. This first-time initiative will better accommodate the numerous buyer-tenant appointments that regularly take place at the ITC during the show. The shuttle will run between 9 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. from the ITC’s 23rd Street entrance and the Javits Center.
