Black Friday Numbers Forecast Holiday Sales


Consumers were eager to spring up early after the Thanksgiving holiday to get ahead start on scooping discounts at retail stores nationwide. The National Retail Federation (NRF) spent the long Thanksgiving weekend crunching numbers—and reports that consumers favor the ever-earlier hours of Black Friday—with 14.3% of shoppers hard at it by 4 a.m., compared to 12.4% last year. While shopping traffic was up 4.8% compared to last year, the 147 million American shoppers spent about $347.44, down 3.5% from last year. Apparently men outspent women, $393.63 to $303.95.



According to the NRF, last year showed a greater emphasis on high-definition televisions, but this year’s focus is on digital photo frames, laptops, and cashmere sweaters. Shoppers were also most likely to scoop up clothing or clothing accessories (46.8%) as well as books, CDs, DVDs, videos, or video games (41.7%). Consumer electronics were also quite popular with 35.7% of shoppers, as were

toys (28.2%), and gift cards (21%). Based on the weekend sales, the NRF says it continues to project that holiday sales will rise 4% this year to $474.5 billion.



England Kit Affected By England’s Euro 2008 Defeat


UK sports retailer Sports Direct and football brand Umbro—which makes the Three Lions replica kit and is currently subject to a takeover by Nike—have both warned that England’s unexpected knockout from the Euro 2008 championship will cost them important sales next summer. Supermarkets, electrical retailers, and pubs and bars are also likely to be adversely affected by England’s defeat to Croatia .



H&M Partners with Marimekko for Spring 2008


In its latest collaboration, H&M has created a collection using ’50s, ’60s, and ’70s prints from the iconic Finnish textile and clothing brand Marimekko. The summer 2008 collection will be sold in H&M stores in all 28 markets beginning in April 2008.



The collection will include womenswear, menswear, childrenswear, and accessories.



H&M’s head of design Margareta van den Bosch says, “Our design team has long admired Marimekko’s vivid prints and colors. When our designers came up with the idea of creating a collection with Marimekko prints, it felt natural and just the right time. The summer collection 2008 will be joyfully fresh like a vitamin injection.”



Storm Hawks Signs Licensing Deal With Topps


Target Entertainment has signed a UK licensing deal for the boys’ action adventure animated show Storm Hawks with collectables publisher Topps Europe for trading cards, trading card games, collectible stickers and albums. The products are set to be available in autumn 2008. The Nerd Corps production premiered on the UK’s Cartoon Network in August this year. Master toy licensee Spin Master is set to start the licensing roll-out with action figures, play sets, and vehicles due in stores spring next year.



Imira Expands Into New Areas in Spain


Spanish Imira Entertainment—formerly Icon Animation—has made a number of sales to Spanish broadcasters from its programming library. It has partnered with ZDF Enterprises to place two of its shows on RTVE. The public broadcaster has acquired Wicked Science (52x26’) for TV2 and Clan TV, and The Lost Treasure of Fiji (13x26’) for Clan TV, two series from award-winning Australian producer Jonathan M Shiff and co-produced by ZDF, ZDF Enterprises, and Network Ten. Through the partnership with ZDF, this deal represents Imira Entertainment’s first live action distribution agreement.  



The Disney Channel Spain has picked up animation Ozie Boo, Learn To Live Together (52x2’) for its Playhouse Disney Channel. The penguin-themed preschool series is produced by Cyber Group Animation.



In a further deal, Jetix’s new girl-skewed magazine Jetix Chic!, which has a circulation of over 100,000 in Spain, has signed a deal to feature the hit property Lola & Virginia in each monthly issue. The series airs in Spain on The Disney Channel as well as RTVE, TV3, and ETB. Imira has also made further sales of Lola & Virginia with TV Andorra and Digiturk in Turkey.



In Portugal, Imira has scored a free TV deal with RTP for Millimages’ Pitt & Kantrop (39x26’), alongside DVD deals for Lola & Virginia with LNK and 64 Zoo Lane , also from Millimages, with Prisvideo.



AboutGolf Indoor Simulators Add St Andrews Links Courses


AboutGolf simulators has added three of the famous Scottish St Andrews links’ courses to its line of fully three-dimensional courses. The agreement, brokered by Copyright Promotions Sport (CPS), will see the Ohio-based company recreate every fine detail resulting in a near exact replica of each hole and the surrounding vistas.



Galactico Signs Up for Alphanim’s Galactik Football


French animation producer Alphanim has bagged international footballer Fabio Cannavaro to endorse Galactik Football DVDs, which are to be cover-mounted on Italy’s sports magazine Gazzetta dello Sport. Cannavaro is captain of the Italian national football team, reigning Golden Ball winner, and is one of Real Madrid’s star footballers—appropriately nicknamed the “Galacticos”. The DVDs, licensed to sports video producer Bigberry, will each contain two episodes from series one of Galactik Football. The promotion starts in spring 08.



Dr Who Travels to the Art World


Dr Who has entered the world of art collection with the launch of limited-edition prints from the series. Created by Department Six in a license from BBC Worldwide, the artwork brings original designs from the show to life in limited-edition prints of archival quality.



Ten images are available initially including Dalek DNA, The Master’s Ring, The Doctor’s Fob Watch, and Santa Masks from last year’s Christmas special. Future releases will include The Tardis, The Doctor’s Sonic Screwdriver, and Gallifreyan text.



Each print run is limited to 500 giclee editions, which will be numbered and signed by the artists who created the original designs. The prints will be delivered with an accompanying certificate of authenticity. Each print is hand-mounted and wrapped in a fine tissue paper overprinted with Gallifreyan text and shielded by a custom made foam lined box.  



Edward Thomas, Department Six chairman says, “We were keen to develop artwork that allowed the incredible talent captured in the images to be appreciated by future generations. The intricacy and care put in to the prints makes them must-haves for collectors, and for a wider audience appreciative of the magic of this treasured television series.”



In other news, BBC Worldwide has released In the Night Garden… A Musical Journey…The Album on CD and for download. BBC Worldwide Music licenses the album to specialty children’s label Little Demon. The 25-track CD is packaged with a 12-page roll fold following the narrative of the album in pictures. It was released digitally on November 26.



Thumb Wresting Federation Signs Up Bulldog in the UK


Animation Collective, an independent U.S. children’s entertainment business, has signed London-based Bulldog Licensing to represent Thumb Wrestling Federation: TWF in the UK . The live-action, short-format comedy series about a fictional sports league debuted on BBC One’s CBBC in September, and is also aired on BBC Two.  



Rob Corney, managing director of Bulldog Licensing says, “We believe Thumb Wrestling Federation: TWF is a fantastic opportunity for UK licensees as it suits a British sense of humor perfectly. The classic play pattern of thumb wrestling at the heart of the show makes it perfect for merchandise and the viewing figures bear out the fact that this is precisely the type of property we believe will succeed at UK retail.”



Parthenon Entertainment Sells Roman Mysteries to Germany


Parthenon Entertainment has sold its children’s BBC drama series Roman Mysteries to German public broadcaster ARD. The deal, which was brokered via Telepool, sees the German public broadcaster acquire the first series (10 x 30’ HD), with an option to acquire the second.



ARD will broadcast Roman Mysteries in its kid’s slot, which airs on Saturday and Sunday mornings. The series will also air on the ARD/ZDF owned German children’s channel KI.KA on Saturday afternoons.



Commissioned by the BBC and produced by UK production company The Little Entertainment Group (LEG), Roman Mysteries follows four friends – Flavia, Nubia, Jonathan and Lupus – as they struggle to live through one of history’s most turbulent times. Each episode deals with issues of prejudice, violence and the environment, wrapped up in riveting stories of mystery and suspense.



Budgeted at £10 million for both series, Roman Mysteries is the BBC’s largest ever children’s drama commission.



DECODE Ups Sales in Asia


DECODE Enterprises, the distribution subsidiary of DECODE Entertainment’s parent company DHX Media, has sold nearly 250 half hours of programming in Asia with a sales of three series to Disney Channel India and two series to ATV Hong Kong and True Visions Thailand.



The Disney Channel India has acquired three series from DECODE’s slate, with deals for live action shows The Latest Buzz and Naturally Sadie alongside a pick up of CGI animation Urban Vermin.



Thailand’s True Visions has acquired animation Bo On the GO! produced by DHX subsidiary Halifax Film and preschool series Franny’s Feet. Decode has also sold the first 13 episodes of Super Why, a production from Blue’s Clue’s producer Out of the Blue Enterprises and DECODE Entertainment, and Turner Broadcasting’s live action My Spy Family to ATV Hong Kong.

Marvel Entertainment Taps SEGAL Licensing for Canada


Marvel Entertainment, Inc. named SEGAL Licensing as its new licensing representative in Canada. SEGAL will oversee all sales, retail, merchandising, and marketing and help Marvel expand its presence in territories that have previously been underserved and fuel international growth. SEGAL will work with new and existing licensees on product development and design and sku plans as well as with Canadian retailers to secure retail support and distribution.



Dear America Lands On DVD


Scholastic Media and Genius Products, LLC will work together on distributing the Dear America series on DVD. The series originally aired on HBO Family and depicts dramatic moments in history through the eyes of young girls. Dear America is based on the Scholastic book series.



20th Century Fox L&M Secures Deal for Family Guy


Family Guy will star in its first national QSR promotion at Subway Restaurants. The promotion runs through December 30th at more than 22,000 Subway Restaurants and will be supported online and through a national TV spot. All participating restaurants will provide diners with the option of receiving a one-of-a-kind collector’s cup. The campaign will also travel outside the restaurants in the form of an online game—The Family Guy Quahog Triangle where players can answer trivia questions with the help of some of the most popular Quahog residents.



Hasbro to Develop Games for New Show


Program Partners and Merv Griffin Entertainment sold the licensing rights for the new game show “Merv Griffin’s Crosswords” to Hasbro Inc. Hasbro will develop at-home games based on Crosswords beginning in 2008. The series is the No.1 new game show in syndication, airing in over 90% of the U.S. , including major market NBC owned stations.



NARUTO Headlines Holiday Promotion


VIZ Media, LLC teamed up with Trans World Entertainment Corporation on a holiday retail campaign utilizing web, print, broadcast, and related multimedia to promote the release of a new three-disc Deluxe Edition of NARUTO THE MOVIE: NINJA CLASH IN THE LAND OF SNOW ($29.98). As part of the promotion, Maile Flanagan, the voice of Naruto in the animated TV series, recorded a special in-character reminder for the f.y.e. and Suncoast Backstage Pass customers. NexCen Brands Grows Bill Blass Program


NexCen Brands, Inc. entered into a 30-year licensing agreement with the Camuto Group to develop women’s footwear for all categories of NexCen’s luxury brand, Bill Blass. The duo will also partner on acquiring The Shoe Box Inc., a multi-brand luxury shoe retailer whose brand portfolio includes BCBG, Nicole Miller, Chloe, Jimmy Choo, and Marc Jacobs. The agreement will enable the Camuto Group to create a product for Bill Blass as a key component of The Shoe Box strategy. NexCen and the Camuto Group will seek to roll-out in excess of 500 of The Shoe Box stores globally.



Chorion Silver Lining Signs Charming Deal


High IntenCity Corp. will bring a little sunshine into the jewelry category with a line of charms featuring the Mr. Men Little Miss property. The Chorion Silver Lining property takes center stage in its interchangeable CHARM IT! program featuring characters such as Little Miss Sunshine, Chatterbox, Giggles, and Fun. Steve Madden Taps Gina Group for Hosiery Deal


Steven Madden, Ltd. continues to diversify its product offering inking a deal with the Gina Group for a collection of hosiery under the Steve Madden and Steven brands. The hosiery collection will consist of footed and footless legwear as well as novelty items. The collection will be found in company-owned stores in February 2008 and in better department stores and specialty retailers beginning July 2008.



The Doodlebops To Fill The Holiday With Music


The Doodlebops are ringing in the holidays with new releases in November and December. “Everybody Singing,” a holiday song by The Doodlebops, will be available on iTunes starting Nov. 27. Kids can also get into the holiday spirit with “Happy Doodle Holidays” a DVD featuring four episodes and bonus features including four sing-along songs and two dance-alongs. The musical group will also star in “The Doodlebops Holiday Show,” on Dec. 1 as part of a holiday-themed marathon of programming on Playhouse Disney.



Dora Named Toy of the Year in the Netherlands


Nick Jr’s Dora the Explorer VTech TV Globe scooped the ‘Toy of the Year 2007’ award in the 0-4 year old category at the Toy of the Year Awards, which were held in the Netherlands. The adventurous Latina heroine, who has introduced millions of pre-schoolers to the joys of speaking Spanish, garnered more than 15,000 votes from the Dutch public in the run-up to the 34th anniversary of the prestigious awards.
