Burger King Inks Two Deals


Burger King Corp. aligned with mobile content provider Mobliss Inc. to create downloadable cell-phone games featuring its branded content, including the King. The first game, due spring 2008, will feature players vying for the role of the King’s protégé by facing challenges and progressing in the virtual world of a Burger King-themed city. Burger King plans to promote the game through in-restaurant signage and packaging. Customers will send a text message to download and purchase the game. In other news, the King will be gracing doorsteps again this Halloween with Rubie’s Costumes creating a Deluxe King Costume with a robe, latex mask, and oversized gold medallion, and the Extra Large King Mask featuring the King’s oversized head in a royally adorned box. Both deals were brokered by Burger King Corp.’s licensing agent, Broad Street Licensing Group.

Pokémon Pandemonium is Back in Canada


The Pokémon brand in Canada is expected to reach $30 million in retail sales in

2007, representing double—and, in some categories, triple—the business it did in 2006, including sales of video games, trading cards, toys, home decor, and apparel. This resurgence was fueled by the launch of the Pokémon Diamond and Pokémon Pearl video games for the Nintendo DS, featuring more than 100 new Pokémon characters, and the introduction of a new expansion of the Pokémon Trading Card Game in May.

Pokémon Diamond and Pokémon Pearl are the fastest-selling video games in the history of the series, with worldwide sales in excess of 10 million games, and Pokémon Trading Card Game sales up an astounding 300 percent.

Already a top-rated program on Cartoon Network in the United States, the Canadian debut on YTV of the 10th season of the animated TV series “Pokémon: Diamond and Pearl,” is generating impressive ratings since its start on Sept. 28.

X Games Gains Foothold in Category


ESPN Consumer Products signed a licensing agreement with American Sporting Goods Corp. to develop and launch the X Games Gear’s footwear line due at retail spring 2008. The line will feature styles including casual, lifestyle, athletic, and performance shoes/sneakers; slides; slip-ons; slippers; sandals; boots; and flip-flops at specialty stores, sporting goods retailers, mid-tier department stores, and better family footwear stores.



Companies Ink Sales Service Deal


Universal Studios Home Entertainment Canada and Nelvana Enterprises signed a seven-year sales services agreement with a potential two-year extension, beginning in fall 2007. As part of the deal, Universal Studios Home Entertainment Canada will manufacture, market, and sell five properties on DVD for Nelvana Enterprises in Canada, including “Jane and the Dragon,” “Grossology,” “Di-Gata Defenders,” “Ruby Gloom,” and a feature-length “Franklin” movie.

Hot Topic Shells Out New Retro Campaign


Hot Topic will launch Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles retro boutiques in 700 of its stores. The retro campaign is a joint effort between 4Kids Entertainment and Mirage Licensing and builds on the look from the 1980s TV series. Products headed for shelves in November include an existing selection of Ts and hoodies as well as new products from Giant Merchandising. Bioworld has also created new T-shirt designs, new caps, beanies, and belt buckles, while Hot Topic has secured partners in other product categories such as wrist cuffs, wallets, key chains, and other accessories. The retailer has also been given exclusive access to 1980s villain artwork for Rocksteady, Bebop, and Krang for apparel. 4Kids also expanded the program across other categories including NECA (collectible figures), Etchstar (laser etchings on iPods and laptops), and Disguise (Halloween costumes for lead characters). Product is expected to roll out in early 2008 to specialty and mid-tier retail.

The Licensing Shop Partners with CBS Consumer Products


CBS Consumer Products tapped The Licensing Shop Inc. as its exclusive licensing agency in Canada. TLS will be tasked with building merchandising programs for CBS’s signature brands including “Star Trek,” “America’s Next Top Model,” and “Kid Nation,” along with iconic TV series such as “Twilight Zone,” “The Brady Bunch,” “Cheers,” and “Beverly Hills 90210.”

U.S. Polo Piggybacks on Arvind Mills


The United States Polo Association signed a licensing agreement with textile manufacturer and retailer Arvind Mills to distribute its clothing brand U.S. Polo in India. Arvind will also develop the brand’s flagship stores in India.

With a presence in every major city of the world, U.S. Polo Association has sales in excess of $1 billion across all categories. U.S. Polo Association retails men’s, women’s, and children’s sportswear, dress clothing and accessories such as socks, neckwear, hats and bags, and small leather goods.

Comic, Hobby Stores Get First Dibs on Trading-Card Game


4Kids Entertainment Inc. and its subsidiary TC Digital Games LLC are releasing the first wave of the Chaotic Trading Card Game starter decks and booster packs on Oct. 24 exclusively to comic and hobby stores nationwide and in Canada. Fans can purchase “Chaotic OverWorld: The Dawn of Perim” and “Chaotic UnderWorld: The Dawn of Perim” starter decks as well as “The Dawn of Perim Secrets” booster packs. also launches Oct. 24. The trading-card game is slated for the mass market in early 2008, supported by TV advertising. A licensing and marketing program is under development with first products to begin shipping in early 2008. The show currently airs Saturday mornings on 4Kids TV as well as daily on Jetix.

Jacuzzi Pools Resources with New Licensee


Jacuzzi Brands Corp.’s subsidiary Jacuzzi Inc. granted an exclusive license to Quebec-based Competition Pool Accessories Inc. to manufacture and market swimming pool accessory products under its famous Jacuzzi trademark. This is the second licensing agreement to be announced in the past three months by Jacuzzi, which is aggressively expanding the reach of its brand.

Competition Pool Accessories plans on marketing Jacuzzi-branded pool equipment products, such as pumps, automatic cleaners, and filters, as a new, high-end offering. These will replace products sold under the J-Series logo (formerly produced by Cantar Pool Products). Competition will continue to support legacy Jacuzzi-branded pool parts and accessories already in the marketplace.

Woods Has Endorsement Deal With Gatorade


Tiger Woods will have his own brand of sports drink next year under an endorsement deal with Gatorade that marks a couple of firsts for the world’s No. 1 golfer—his first U.S. deal with a beverage company and his first licensing agreement. Gatorade said it will introduce Gatorade Tiger in March, with more products to follow. Woods chose the flavors himself, with the drink available in a cherry blend, citrus blend, and grape.

BLE Enjoys Record Show


Brand Licensing Europe 2007 held in London in October set a record for the event, with just under 4,300 visitors attending, an increase of 8 percent over 2006. The figures, which are subject to an ABC audit, show that 18 percent of attendees were European (excluding UK), up 36 percent on the previous year, and that the number of retail buying teams at the show was up by 6 percent.

publisher Advanstar Communications, 23 percent of visitors were international, a 26 percent increase over the previous year.

The number of licensees attending went up by 7 percent, and there was a leap of 29 percent in the number of sales promotion agencies. Of the total, 91 percent of attendees either authorized or recommended purchasing decisions, an 8 percent increase over 2006.

The pre-ABC audited total attendance figure is 5,490 visitors, up 10 percent on the previous year.

Almost 500 people attended The Licensing Academy series of seminars held during the event.

Over 60 percent of the exhibit space has already been booked for Brand Licensing Europe 2008. 

Haynes Gets in Gear with Lee Cooper


UK car manual publisher Haynes is slipping into a new gear with British denim brand Lee Cooper to create a workwear range. This is the latest stage of a brand extension program for Haynes, which has been publishing its repair manuals since the 1960s.

Lee Cooper—the original British denim company, and Europe’s oldest, founded by Morris Cooper in 1908—has worked the Haynes signature style into a collection of clothing and workwear including jeans, jackets, dungarees, and T-shirts. The hand-drawn car cutaway artwork featured in Haynes Manuals is used prominently on the apparel as are the Haynes and Lee Cooper branding.

Nickelodeon Arabia to Launch in 2008


MTV Networks International (MTVNI) and Arab Media Group (AMG) have partnered to launch Nickelodeon Arabia, a localized Arabic-language, free-to-air channel for children across the Middle East. With this agreement, Nickelodeon will be the first global children’s media brand to create a free-to-air Arabic service across the region. The channel will fall under the umbrella of Arabian Television Network (ATN), AMG’s TV broadcasting arm that also incorporates the soon-to-launch MTV Arabia and three other stations that will launch before the end of 2007.

Copyrights Launches Amazing Baby Licensing Program


The Copyrights Group agreed to a deal with The Templar Company to handle the worldwide (excluding the United States and Canada) merchandising rights for its publishing brand Amazing Baby. First published in May 2003, the Amazing Baby series, which combines black-and-white photographs, distinctive design, and contemporary icons, has proven very popular, quickly establishing itself in the UK with sales of 1.5 million copies. The brand already has a range of baby toys developed by U.S.-based Kids Preferred and distributed in the UK by Rainbow Designs.

Ben 10 Signs Apparel and Paper-Product Deals


Cartoon Network Enterprises has inked a number of apparel and paper-product licenses for “Ben 10,” the hit boys’ property. Blues has taken an apparel license, Aykroyds is producing a range of Ben 10 nightwear, Brand International is doing Ben 10 footwear, Roy Lowe will be producing Ben 10 socks, and TDP offers a range of Ben 10 underwear.

In addition, three licensees have signed deals for a variety of lines in the paper-good and gift sectors: Pyramid Posters will produce a range of Ben 10 posters, key rings, and badges; Gemma International will produce a range of cards and gift wrap; and Mr. Lucky Bags will be introducing a range of Ben 10 gift bags.

Fundex Phases in New Mobile Game


Fundex Games and Magmic Games signed a three-year, five-game partnership with Phase 10, a rummy card game, soon headed for cell phones and other mobile devices worldwide. The game is based on a variant of rummy known as Liverpool Rummy and requires a special card deck, produced by Fundex Games, and can be played by two to six people.


 


Happy Tree Friends Comes to Apparel


Coastal Concepts Inc. and Mondo Entertainment will partner on a line of Happy Tree Friends branded apparel. Besides brokering this most recent deal, Signatures Network has secured additional deals in categories such as TV, home video, online platforms, mobile content, and gaming.



Wild Republic to Support Documentary


Wild Republic signed a global agreement with National Geographic as an exclusive toy product partner for

Arctic Tale

, a movie from National Geographic Films and Paramount Classics that is currently in theaters and due on DVD in December. Sesame Workshop ‘Pears Up’ with Stemilt


Sesame Workshop will convey the health benefits of apples and pears to its littlest fans via a deal with Stemilt Growers. Elmo and Abby Cadabby will be featured on themed retail merchandising displays for Pinata, a new apple variety while Big Bird, Elmo, and Oscar the Grouch will be featured on displays for pears this fall.

Sean John Fashions Hosiery Deal


Sean John has added hosiery for spring/summer 2008, produced exclusively by Mountain High Knitwear, to its increasing roster of fashion offerings. The new sock collection covers several categories including dress, casual, and athletic as well as the introduction of the “Ath-Leisure” subcategory, which combines the functionality of a ped sock with a luxury fabrication. For boys, Sean John offers a more condensed line of athletic and fashion socks.

Goodyear Tests Tread of Brand at Retail


The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company will broaden its licensing presence at retail with the first-ever freestanding product kiosks at 65 Goodyear Auto Service Centers and 118 Just Tires locations across the United States. The new kiosks will offer 22 distinctive products ranging from air compressors to floor mats and air-pressure gauges from more than 60 licensees. The initial kiosk pilot program will be evaluated in the first quarter of 2008 with the possibility of being expanded to all 750 Goodyear-owned Auto Service Centers and then migrate to Goodyear’s independent dealer network throughout North America. There is also the possibility that the program could extend to other geographies.


 


First Fifa Store to Open in Singapore Airport


The first Official FIFA Store is to open its doors in January 2008 in the new Terminal Three at Singapore’s Changi airport. Global Brands Group has teamed up with airport retailer Nuance-Watson (Singapore) to operate the inaugural Official FIFA Store.

Nuance-Watson will manage retail operations for the 157-square-meter football-lifestyle store, which will feature exclusive FIFA-branded and FIFA World Cup inspired products, as well as best-selling football merchandise from FIFA’s partner Adidas.

EM Entertainment Showcases Licenses


The Licensing Market 2007 to be held in Germany in November will be the backdrop for showcasing the latest license from EM Entertainment—“Dive Olly Dive!” (Tauch, Timmy, Tauch!). As exclusive licensing agency, the company will market the format in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. “Dive Olly Dive!” is a fantasy 3D animation series for children aged between 3 and 8 that follows the underwater adventures of young research submarine Olly and his best friend Beth.

The Licensing Market 2007 takes place Nov. 6 at the Bayerischer Hof Hotel in Munich.

New Deal for JA Apparel


Hampshire Group Ltd. has signed licensing agreements with JA Apparel Corp. to market men’s tops and women’s related separates under classification labels of the Joseph Abboud Brand. These new licenses enable Hampshire’s men’s division to become a true year-round resource for its retail partners, while affording significant opportunity for Hampshire to broaden the penetration of its related separates business within the department store channel.

Executives on the Move


Copyright Promotions Licensing Group (CPLG) appointed Alex Bloor retail manager for Copyright Promotions UK. Bloor has more than seven years experience in the toys and games industry. She was previously marketing manager for games at Hasbro.

Clare Piggott has joined Nickelodeon UK as vice president, consumer products. She has taken over from Trudi Hayward, who has left the company to work as a consultant.
